Taka Hayashi for VansVault 2010 Spring Collection

Influenced by traditionally crafted Native American goods, vintage military surplus and craftsmanship from 1960’s Italian-made footwear, Taka Hayashi presents his latest designs for the Vans Vault campaign. Spring/Summer 2010 introduces us to two new silhouettes in the line, the Prison Issue Lace LX and Priz Hi Lace LX, both combining generous detailing and premium material usage throughout. Two colorways of each sneaker are set for this release, both of which can now be found through Vans Vault accounts.

Vans 2010 Fall/Winter Versa Collection Preview

Previewed is a peek into Vans’ Versa lineup for Fall/Winter 2010. Four different colors in the Versa are shown, all taking on premium suede uppers with an overall classy, versatile look. A release is set for the Fall/Winter season with further information on the sneaker’s design aesthetic offered below.

The vision of the Versa was to create a product that was ideal for the next generation of hardcore skateboarders who want a product that can perform and also have a more refined sense of aesthetic style. Alex Olson was a key contributor to this project and explained that he wanted a product that would function perfectly, look good on and off his board, and stand apart from the standard skate shoe design formula. We were really inspired by this idea and set out to blend high performance and high-end style—the result is a very versatile shoe. The upper is based on simple, sophisticated luxury sneakers, while the outsole is a clean, refined version of our classic look. The stylish performance bottom unit delivers the grip and cushioning required by the most demanding professional skaters.

J.Cole XXL 2010 Freshmen Freestyle

Small Eyez - The i Of It All (Courtesy of Miss Solow Dolow)

Hip hop soul doesn't just go with Mary J. Blige. Morehouse brother Smalleyez talks about what inspires the music he creates with a short answer as to why I helps identify everyone in some way. Athens is just one of the places he is chasing his dream.

Miss Solow Dolow: How would you describe your sound?

Small Eyez: Indie, hip hop, and soul. Soul being the feeling I try to convey in the records and the indie being the diversity in approach and sounds I'm going for in my music.

MSD: What are some of your influences?

SE: My parents. Innovators, lyricists, and songwriters from Tribe [Called Quest] to Bob Marley, from the Beach Boys to Common the list goes on and on. Anyone who has truly pushed the artform forward. I have studied and adapted my style from them.

MSD: Why the name Smalleyez?

SE: The short answer is taking a step back and seeing the whole picture. Look at I and i. I defines me, mine, ego. The small i in the word will is just as important as the rest of the letters. Without it you lose the meaning. There’s a bit of small eyez in everything.

MSD: What exactly is Che Sing the Cool?

SE: Che Sing the Cool describes the lifelong chase of the pursuit of your dreams. We all chase it everyday. Che Sing The Cool brands my marketing company and blog. It's the platform I use to promote me and promote good music from all genres.

MSD: Are you familiar with the Athens music scene?

SE: A little bit. Lyric Jones and Tommy Valentine brought me to Athens last year and I realized that the scene here is really bubbling.

MSD: Who would you like to collaborate with in either Athens or Atlanta?

SE: Lyric [Jones] is at the top of my athens list. I'm down to work with anybody with a great sound and good ideas.

MSD: Are you familiar with the lineup for Friday's show?

SE: Some. But I'm sure everybody’s gonna kill it in their own way.

MSD: What can the crowd expect Friday night?

SE: Mind explosions from the crowd, their hearts, bodies and souls! The radiant is coming!!!

MSD: Any last words?

SE: Visit www.Smalleyez.com. From the Sol, get it for free and spread it like mayonnaise!

Lyric Jones - Grind Season in Athens (Courtesy of Miss Solow Dolow)

Miss Sunshine herself is gearing up for a show in Athens that is set to put her on top. Hold her responsible for bringing one of newest rap talents to Athens and making things happen for everyone on the bill. With performances all over both A's, Atlanta and Athens, she is aiding the hip hop scene in Bulldog Nation with her lyrical talent, soulful voice, and big smile.

Miss Solow Dolow: Great music always comes out of Athens. Describe the Athens music scene.

Lyric Jones: [sigh] Ok, Athens for the most part is dominated by indie rock, pop, alternative or metal bands. That’s the bread maker around here. Sometimes I think of going the rock route. [laughs] If it’s hip hop or rap, it'll have to be a Soulja Boy or Gucci Mane to actually see cats come out in the masses. The hip hop scene as a whole is doing much better than when I was a freshman back in 2006-07, but from what I heard from folks before me, the scene was even more authentic and appreciated before I came. Hip hop was valued. Now, things may appear cool and thriving on the hip hop scene here to everyone else outside of Athens, but the Hip Hop community is struggling to stay alive. Folks are not coming out to support [good music] so it is what it is. I guess all in all It’s straight.

MSD: Any new influences?

LJ: Shouts out to my big sis Boog Brown whom you've interviewed a couple weeks ago, I've really been inspired and motivated by her. She rocks and is one of my favorite artists right now.

MSD: Who would you like to collaborate with in either Athens or Atlanta?

LJ: In Athens, my man Kayez, he's been supporting me and helping me out since day one. In Atlanta, I have a few at the top of my radar currently. Conversations have been had with Stanza, Boog Brown, Aleon Craft, J-Live, The Remnant Crew, Chantae Cann, Tom P, The 5ive, Small Eyez, and my newest partner in crime Ness Lee.

MSD: How did you become involved with the show? Are you familiar with the lineup?

LJ: I became involved by proposing the initial idea to bring J. Cole to Adrian Zelski (co-owner of New Earth Music Hall). I know J. Cole personally and actually have been talking to him and his team about coming to Athens since I saw him in Boston last summer while he was on tour. From then on we all started a little hip hop caucus around this show and a few others (316 Connection and H.E.R. Hip Hop Showcase) to build the buzz around all the hip Hop shows going on at New Earth. J. Cole may be the biggest. The success of this show is extremely important to me. I'm pretty familiar with everyone. I've heard a lot of good things and I'm excited to see them smash.

MSD: What can the crowd expect Friday night?

LJ: Seriously, I got a good set, great energy, and live musicians. I go on right before J. Cole so I have no choice but to warm up the crowd for him to smash. I'm excited!

MSD: Any last words/upcoming projects?

LJ: Hopefully, with this J. Cole show, we can prove we can have high profile hip hop artists here.

MSD: How is the degree coming? Last time we talked that was your main upcoming project?

LJ: Oh I am in school huh? [laughs] I forget sometimes. It’s cool and fun for the most part. Very chill semester. Mainly with classes, we produce a daily news show. I've had the chance to be a news reporter, sports reporter, anchor, producer, etc. Good stuff for the resume reel.

MSD: And I know you're opening for ……yuuup?!

LJ: Shhhh!! I wasn't gonna announce that until Saturday. LOL, well, it's out now. YUUUP, opening for Trey Songz on April 29th in Athens @ Legion Field UGA 8pm. Check out my website www.LyricJones.com

UVA "Speed of Light" Exhibition Recap

United Visual Artists (UVA) was commissioned by Virgin Media to create an immersive light installation on London’s South Bank, to mark the tenth anniversary of broadband in the UK. “Speed of Light” is a series of installations that explore the themes of communication and modernity. Stripped back to its materials, fiber-optic is a thin strand of glass, with nothing more than a flickering beam of light. UVA have used this beam as the starting point for their work. The installations dramatize the experience of using fiber-optic communication, re-imagining it as an immersive environment. The installation officially opened a few days back, with images being made available, courtesy of Creative Review.

H.E.R. Hip Hop Showcase feature in The Emory Wheel

Athens Music Festival Seeks to Showcase Real Hip-Hop
by: Jareen Imam

Music, music, music. The hip-hop kind, that is. It’s what Elizabeth Schenck’s mind has been focusing on for the past few weeks — especially as the calendar grows closer to April 9, the date that Schenck and her college business partners have secured for their self-started business’s first annual hip-hop showcase in Athens.

Schenck, a University of Georgia (UGA) business management student, crafted the idea of a hip-hop music festival with her friends and fellow UGA Business Music students Stephen Prevost and Rebekah Baldwin. The result was hip-hop entertainment company H.E.R. Now, the 20-year-old college student has collected an extensive line-up of hip-hop artists, sponsors and music enthusiasts to come out to Athen’s New Earth Music Hall.

“The business came about totally backwards,” Schenck said in an interview with the Wheel. “A couple months ago, I was at a music festival for a school assignment, and I had the chance to interview some hip-hop artist that I loved. And I just asked them, ‘Why don’t you come to Athens and do a show?’”

Tired of the long highway treks she constantly made to Atlanta in order to see the latest hip-hop shows, Schenck was eager to offer under-the-radar hip-hop artists the opportunity to perform in Athens, the college town of UGA. Schenck considered the request far-fetched, since Athens is known best for its traditional affinity to country and rock music.

However, rappers such as Dead Prez, Kidz in the Hall and WrittenHouse agreed to perform in Athens for H.E.R’s music festival.

“I didn’t set out to do a festival,” Schenck said. “That’s just how it panned out to be, and we had the idea to have a showcase in Athens solely for real hip-hop.”

“Real hip-hop” is the concept of the UGA students’ H.E.R. music company. The company’s goal is to promote the music of unconventional hip-hop artists by offering artist promotion, publicity, booking and music licensing opportunities.

The more concrete the music festival became, the more certain Schenck and Prevost knew they were on to something. Schenck, who believed their promotional activities warranted the creation of a company, insisted that the group come up with a distinctive name to brand their work. Prevost suggested that the three officially name their business H.E.R.

“When I came up with H.E.R. I was thinking about Common’s song ‘I Used to Love H.E.R.,’” Prevost said. “It’s a song about how Common got used to this woman who represents hip-hop, but she changed and became commercialized.”

Both Prevost and Schenck agree that the company’s name is meaningful to what the company represents, but they admitted that the name is constantly misinterpreted.

“There’s a deep meaning behind the name,” Schenck said. “But then again people get a little confused about whether or not this is a feminist music group — it’s not.”

It is not just the name that is meaningful, according to Schenck. Schenck explained that the goal of H.E.R is to promote conscious music created by undiscovered artists. She and Prevost said that these sorts of hip-hop artists have a difficult time getting their music on the air or out to the public because it doesn’t fit the mold of the stereotypical, radio-played rap songs.

“This music isn’t about going to the club. These artists are creative, and their music comes from the heart. It doesn’t come from some studio with a super producer dictating what music is,” Schenck said.

Schenck and Prevost’s admiration for “real hip-hop” stems from what they consider their love for music, which started at a young age for both.

Prevost initially wished to become a music producer but during his college career switched his ambitions towards business.

“I didn’t have the ear for [music producing],” he said. However, Prevost said H.E.R. incorporates his love for music with business, something he thinks can transform into a potential career for him.

Although none of the three H.E.R. founders ever imagined that their efforts would transform into an actual music festival or business, both Schenck and Prevost hope that H.E.R. will flourish into an actual career for them.

However, they said that they are still facing a lot of skepticism from some college peers who think the upcoming festival is a joke.

“Even my mom thinks it a joke,” Schenck said. “She thinks I am going to get sued or something.”

But skeptics are not dampening H.E.R.’s creators. Schenck and Prevost have been promoting the upcoming festival nonstop in Athens and in Atlanta, hoping to get students and music lovers up to Athens to see the show.

“We want this to be successful because we want artists to feel like Athens is a hip-hop environment,” Schenck said. “We want people to come and experience what real hip-hop is all about.”

The H.E.R. Hip-Hop Showcase will be held on April 9 in the New Earth Hall Music in Athens. A number of nationally known artists, as well as local Atlanta and Athens acts, are expected to perform. Attendees will have the chance to meet the artists in a mixer and panel discussion also being put together by the H.E.R music company.

As the H.E.R. festival approaches, Schenck and her business partners wait in eager anticipation to see if traditional rock-and-roll hot spot Athens will be the next hip-hop music hub in the South.
